2020 Project Co. Mataro
Petaluma routinely explores the boundaries of wine style, grape variety and growing region. From time to time, the fruits of these trials warrant special release under the Petaluma Project Company label. A varietal mostly known to be blended with Grenache and Shiraz, Mataro thrives on its own too with bright fruit and soft tannins. This wine in some parts of the world go by Mourvedres and Monastrell too!
The vintage of 2020 was warm, with temperatures above the long-term average. This wine was crafted with all handpicked fruit. This wine was made with 15% of the whole bunches being placed in the bottom of each fermenter. The rest of the fruit was then crushed, de-stemmed and chilled into the fermenter. The wine was hand plunged gently twice a day during the 10 days of fermentation. The wine was then gently pressed and filled into older oak puncheons to undergo malolactic fermentation. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine was returned to oak for further maturation.
The 2020 Petaluma Project Company Mataro is a bright and elegant red wine. The wine has a bright red hue with a powerful bouquet of potpourri and raspberry. The palate displays soft, supple tannins which meld into the elegant raspberry and blood plumb driven flavours. This wine is made from 98.8% Mataro grapes sourced in the Adelaide Hills.
