2016 B&V Vineyard Adelaide Hills Shiraz
The B&V Vineyard was planted in 1992 on micaceous schist soils on the western escarpment of Mt. Barker on the eastern edge of the Adelaide Hills. The hot days, influenced by the Murray River plains to the east and the cold night air drainage from the central Adelaide Hills to the west, create a large diurnal temperature differential through the growing season which exactly suits Shiraz for optimal quality.
The B&V Vineyard, like most of South Australia, had an incredibly dry winter and spring in 2015, followed by the hottest December on record. The vines reacted by having early bud burst and then flowering, pointing towards a really early season. Happily the region then received significant rain in late January and early February and this really saved the crop.
The fruit was picked on the 27th of February, the earliest on record (normally picked late March or early April) and transported to our winery near Woodside. It was then destemmed, crushed and chilled to fermenter. After 4 days of cold soak, yeast was added to conduct the primary (alcoholic) fermentation which took place in 1.5 tonne open fermenters which were hand plunged twice a day and to Potter heading-down-board fermenters. The Potters have a head board system where the cap of fermenting skins is held submerged in fermenting juice, and once per day this juice is drained off and then pumped back up, gently breaking the cap of skins and helping colour, tannin and flavour extraction.
As the ferments approached sugar dryness, they were inoculated with bacteria to conduct the malo-lactic fermentation (MLF), the conversion of hard malic acid into softer lactic acid. After over two weeks on skins the sugar dry wine was drained off, the skins pressed and the resultant wine gravity fed to barrel. The 2016 is the second organically certified grown and vinified Shiraz, and was aged in 70% new French oak barriques (225 litres), hogsheads (300 litres) and puncheons (400 litres), and 30% older shaved and fired barriques.
The 2016 B&V Shiraz is the second organically certified grown and vinified wine made by Petaluma.
It is a bright fruit, vibrant dense but supple dry red. Ripe red fruits mix with fragrant black pepper and licorice and complement cedar, fresh tobacco and a hint of savoury bacon fat. Spice and pepper accentuate the generous expressive long finish. The tannins are soft, sandy and abundant.
The 2016 B&V Shiraz will reward careful cellaring for many years but is immediately appealing.
