Our viticultural and winemaking team has over 30 years experience and a deep understanding of our vineyards. They are the custodians of these vineyards and the grapes they produce.
Adelaide Hills born and bred, Mike graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree whilst working at the Petaluma winery in the early 1990s. He developed his passion for wine whilst working vintage in Oregon in 1995 and on his return home undertook his degree in Oenology at Charles Sturt University.
Mike was the Sparkling Winemaker for Croser from 2000 and in 2005 was promoted to Petaluma Winemaker in 2005, then Winemaker/Manager in 2010. He was instrumental in the build and transition of Petaluma to its new state of the art winery at Woodside in 2014.
Now in his 30th year at Petaluma he brings a breadth of experience and knowledge in all facets of the business from vine to glass. Mike has been blessed with exceptional vineyards that display the true expression of the varieties that Petaluma produces.
Mike is married to Ali with three children. In his spare time he is Commodore of the Robe Yacht Club, is coach of two basketball teams, loves mountain biking and driving his old Kombi on car rallies into the outback with his family and friends.
Viticulturist at Petaluma and Croser since 1996, Mike Harms’ approach is grounded in attention to detail and timing. He favours an organic approach to foster biodiversity and healthy soils, ensuring the vineyards produce grapes that express the characteristics of each site and the vintage.
Mike had a background in commercial banking, leaving the sector to study Agricultural Science in 1992. This drew on his fascination for biological systems and love for the wine industry that began in his formative years, growing up in the Barossa Valley where his father worked as an accountant for Orlando Wines in the late 1960s. Mike believes strongly in nurturing and supporting healthy and positive relationships with growers and vineyard workers.
Married to Lisa with two children, Mike loves spending time with family and friends. A passionate motorsports enthusiast, he enjoys off-road motorcycling in his spare time.
From the South Island of New Zealand originally Amy studied Ecology and completed a BSc at Otago University; however after spending many uni holidays helping out in her neighbour’s vineyards she found an itch for winemaking and thought she’d give a vintage a go. Her first vintage was at Church Road Winery in Hawkes Bay, NZ and absolutely loved it, the passion for detail and creativity the team had there sold her. Amy then signed up straight away to complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Oenology and hasn’t looked back.
Since moving to Australia in 2012 to work at Hardy’s in McLaren Vale Amy has found it hard to leave. After completing a vintage in Burgundy, France in 2014 she began at Petaluma starting in the laboratory there before working her way through a couple of roles to finally become Sparkling Winemaker (Croser). Working in her current role and looking after the exceptional wines that are Croser has been something of a big achievement for Amy.
Outside of the winery Amy enjoy getting outdoors, in particular going for walks in the evening taking in the beautiful landscapes of the Adelaide Hills, camping on the Yorke Peninsula and getting in the ocean.
David’s interests in Wine and viticulture started at a young age and were influenced by spending time at his Godfather’s (David Noon) winery and vineyard in McLaren Vale. After leaving school, David began studying Agricultural science in 1987 and after two years, transferred to the Oenology degree at Roseworthy College. After graduating, David worked his way through many regions of Australia until he met his wife, Yvonne, in New South Wales and got married in the Hunter Valley.
David and Yvonne decided to move back to South Australia to start a family in 1999 where David joined the team at Grant Burge Wines. Whilst making both red and white wines at Grant Burge, David specialised in Fortified and sparkling wine. After twenty years at Grant Burge, David has now joined the team at Petaluma as winemaker focusing on premium white and red wine production. The chance to work with such exceptional fruit that makes Petaluma wines such an iconic brand, as well as working with such a dedicated and focused team was too much to resist.
David loves outdoor activities with the family as well as tinkering with his vintage cars, cooking and getting out on the golf course.
