Riesling Arrested!

October 31, 2007 by Dredgey

I recently tried to smuggle a 6 pack of 2007 Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling to enjoy with friends whilst on a surfing trip in Male and the Maldives. With Male being Islamic, the Riesling was quickly ushered away to the seconded area that I can only image is enormous.  I hope whoever consumed the Riesling (behind closed doors), if at all enjoyed it. Are there any other tales of misfortune or success out there?  I’ve carried many special bottles all over the planet but still think it is worth the effort!

  2. Dearest Mr Dredgy,

I was alarmed to read of your recent brush with the law, with your attempt to smuggle your big Male Riesling…I mean, your Riesling into Male.

In my day, as a young lass traversing the sub-contintents, I did find it handy to secure a few special bottles in my hand luggage, amongst the unmentionables (no one ever wants to fossick amongst those…) or even to have a few dashes of a lovely Shiraz contained in my great grandfather’s drinking flask. I always explained it was purely for medicinal purposes.

As Mr E. Hemingway once posited, “Wine is the most civilized thing in the world.” And worth all the effort.

  3. Haven’t been to the Maldives but have sampled a few bottles of the Riesling. Usually head for a beer after a wave, but next time may crack a bottle of the good stuff instead.
